Meet Bernice, A Beautiful Female Barber Who is a Graduate of University Of Ghana
There are certain professions that Ghanaians and most people regard as “a man’s job” or a ‘woman’s job,’ but this notion is gradually fading.
We now see men who own beauty salons and excel at what they do. Ladies who are just starting out in the barbering business are also emerging.
It could be argued that why don’t ladies or women focus on women and run beauty salons, while men focus on barbering and leave the women to the beauty salons?
Things are changing now, and I believe we all have different interests. In the same way that some women prefer Mathematics, Engineering, and the like to General Arts or Vocational Studies, some men prefer Vocational Studies and other courses are known to be dominated by women, which is perfectly fine because we all have different goals in life.
This is a female graduate of the University of Ghana, Legon, who chose to be a barber after four years of studying French and sociology.
Maybe she didn’t realize her potential until she started her course, or maybe she just wanted the title, University graduate.
Bernice Botchway, who is now a barber, also attended Ghana National College and studied General Arts.
She decided to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a barber after completing her National Service. According to her, most of her family members are hairdressers and have been an inspiration to her since she was a child, and she has always wanted to be one.
I believe her family wanted her to get a white-collar job because most Ghanaians see it as a good way to live life, but the high unemployment rate in Ghana is encouraging more young people to pursue interests and hobbies.
Our educational system has done a lot of harm to people who have untapped skills in certain areas. People are now working for money with no joy in their hearts, not doing what they truly want to do, simply because their families prefer to see them in certain types of offices.
Thank goodness Bernice Botchway took the risk after her National Service to shadow another barber who also happened to be a graduate of the University of Professional Studies.
She now owns a barbershop and grooms both men and women who want to be barbers. She currently only barbers men but hopes to open a unisex barbershop in the future.
We wish Bernice the best of luck in her endeavor. Climb higher. Most Ghanaian youths will be inspired by this, as employment opportunities are scarce. Discover yourself, and do what you can to make ends meet or survive in this harsh economy.
