Steven Yamba, 44, a businessman from Lusaka, Zambia, is accused of committing suicide after reportedly beating his wife to death during a marital quarrel.
Kangwa Mwango, 33, was badly assaulted and killed on Saturday, December 25th, at approximately 9 a.m., when her husband was driving her to University Teaching Hospital.
According to local media, Mr. Yamba began hitting his wife at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and continued until the early hours of Christmas Day, when he discovered she was losing her life.
After physicians at UTH confirmed his wife’s death, Yamba went into a shop and bought a bottle of insecticide, which he ingested.
According to Rae Hamoonga, a police public relations officer who verified the event, Yamba violently assaulted his wife, who subsequently died on Christmas morning when he was attempting to get her to the hospital for treatment.
“Police today received a report of a murder from F/Cecilia Mwango, 48, of the Kabangwe area, that her sister Kangwa Mwango, 33, was severely beaten up by her husband, Steven Yamba, 44, and eventually died on the 25th of December 2021 while the husband was attempting to ferry her to a hospital for treatment,” Hamoonga stated.
According to Hamoonga, the events that led to the deaths of Kangwa and Yamba began on Christmas Eve.
The PPRO stated that on December 24, 2021, the couple had an argument that led to a fight in which the wife, Kangwa Mwango, was badly battered and spent the night in the house.
“On December 25, 2021, the husband brought her to Chawama hospital, where he was recommended to transport her directly to University Teaching Hospital.” Unfortunately, she died on the way.
“Upon landing at UTH, the husband, Steven Yamba, swiftly slipped to Kabwata market where he bought a bottle of Doom insecticide and committed suicide by swallowing the same,” he continued.
According to Hamoonga, the two remains are currently at the UTH morgue awaiting autopsies and burial.
