Have you ever heard of a momo scam? It’s when a fraudster calls you and tries to trick you into giving them money from your mobile money wallet. Unfortunately, these scams have been on the rise lately.
But one MTN user wasn’t going to fall for it. When a scammer called him and asked for the balance of his money, the customer played along.
He told the fraudster that he needed the money to fix his car, which had broken down on the motorway.
The scammer started to get impatient and put pressure on the customer to send the money. But the customer had a trick up his sleeve.
He told the scammer that he had given the money to a friend to send to him and gave him a fake number to call.
When the scammer called the fake number and no one answered, the customer had a great excuse. He told the scammer that he had no call credit to call his friend and asked if the scammer could send him some airtime. The scammer fell for it and sent the airtime, thinking he was going to get some free money.
While it’s never a good idea to scam someone, it’s important to be aware of these momo scams and not fall for them. If someone calls you and asks for money, be suspicious and don’t give them any information. And if you’re feeling brave, you can even try to outsmart them like this clever MTN user did.
