Presidential candidate hopeful on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has made serious allegations against some members of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s team. Agyapong claims that these individuals were clandestinely working to disgrace another presidential candidate hopeful, Alan Kyerematen. Agyapong raised these concerns during his analysis of the Assin North by-election, which he believes exposed disunity within the NPP.

According to Agyapong, the protocol team around the Vice President deliberately interrupted Alan Kyerematen’s address at the last rally in Assin North. He alleged that one of his hometown acquaintances, who works at State House, climbed onto the dais and instructed Kyerematen to stop talking when the Vice President entered. Agyapong further claimed that Dr. Bawumia was made to wait outside for some time, even though he had arrived at the venue earlier. The protocol team and “small boys” signaled for Dr. Bawumia to enter the grounds only when they saw Kyerematen had started speaking.

Agyapong expressed his dissatisfaction with these actions, particularly since they called for reconciliation later on. He described their behavior as “nasty” and questioned why they would sabotage Kyerematen’s speech and then expect unity within the party.

The NPP’s presidential primary is expected to feature front runners such as Ken Agyapong, Alan Kyerematen, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. The party has also identified Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Boakye Agyarko, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, Joe Ghartey, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Ernest Kwadwo Poku as potential candidates. To oversee the vetting process of these aspirants, the NPP has inaugurated a nine-member committee chaired by Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former Speaker of Parliament. The vetting will take place from July 3 to July 6, 2023, and a special delegates conference will elect five candidates for the final election in November.

During his campaign tour for consideration as flagbearer, Ken Agyapong spoke to NPP members and expressed his concerns about the disunity within the party. He specifically cited the incident at the Assin North rally, where he believed Dr. Bawumia’s arrival was used to malign Alan Kyerematen during his speech. Agyapong highlighted how the protocol team deliberately disrupted Kyerematen’s address by ushering in the Vice President and even had someone instruct Kyerematen to stop speaking.

In conclusion, Agyapong’s allegations and concerns shed light on the disunity within the NPP and the alleged sabotage of one of its presidential candidates. These incidents highlight the need for reconciliation within the party and raise questions about the actions of certain individuals within the Vice President’s team. As the NPP’s presidential race progresses, it will be crucial for the party to address these issues and ensure a fair and united front.
