Kalani David, the former world junior surfing champion, died over the weekend on a Costa Rican beach after having a seizure while practicing in the waters off Costa Rica, according to authorities and friends. He was 24.
David Kalani According to the Associated Press, Feeney Barrientos, also known as Kalani David, was born in Hawaii to a Costa Rican mother and suffered from Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a congenital heart disease that caused paralysis and seizures.
Despite these medical issues, David was a successful athlete. He won the Junior World Surfing title in the Under-16 category in Panama in 2012, and he also skateboarded professionally.
The seizure occurred while David was surfing on Saturday morning in Playa Hermosa, Jacó, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, according to the Judicial Investigation Agency.
“He was surfing when he apparently had an epileptic seizure and drowned,” the agency told The Associated Press in a message. “The cause of death is still being investigated.”
Kalani David excelled in both sports, having competed on a global scale in both. His X Games profile highlights his multi-sport abilities from a young age: “(David) Grew up surfing and skating, so at the ripe old age of 14 he could be considered a seasoned veteran.”
David won team gold and individual gold as a 14-year-old at the 2012 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship in Panama.
His Instagram account is filled with videos and photos of him surfing, skating, and fishing.
Kelly Slater, a famous surfer, posted photos of a young Kalani with the 11-time world champion on Instagram and said, “Kalani was one of the most talented surfer/skaters of all time, constantly pushing the limits every time he stepped onto the water…. Condolences to Kalani’s vast network of friends from coast to coast and around the world.”
