Who is Jordan Peterson?
Jordan Bernt Peterson (born June 12, 1962) is a Canadian media personality, clinical psychologist, author, and University of Toronto professor emeritus. In the late 2010s, he gained widespread attention as a public intellectual for his “conservative” views on cultural and political issues. Peterson has described himself as a “traditionalist” and a “classic British liberal.”
Peterson was born on June 12, 1962, in Edmonton, Alberta, and grew up in Fairview, a small town in the province’s northwest. Walter and Beverley Peterson had three children, the eldest of whom was him. Beverley worked as a librarian at Grande Prairie Regional College’s Fairview campus, and Walter was a teacher. Bernt is his middle name, after his Norwegian great-grandfather. Peterson was raised in a Christian home.
Jordan Peterson Career
Peterson lived in Arlington, Massachusetts, from July 1993 to June 1998, while teaching and conducting research at Harvard University, where he was hired as an assistant professor in the psychology department, later becoming an associate professor. He studied aggression caused by drug and alcohol abuse while at Harvard. According to The Harvard Crimson, he was “willing to take on any research project, no matter how unconventional.” While at Harvard, he shifted his focus from familial alcoholism to personality and published several academic papers. Author Gregg Hurwitz, a former Harvard student of Peterson’s, has cited Peterson as an inspiration to him, and psychologist Shelley Carson, a former PhD student and now-professor at Harvard, has recalled Peterson’s lectures as a source of inspiration for her. “I remember students crying on the last day of class because they wouldn’t get to hear him anymore,” he said, referring to his “cult-like following.” After leaving Harvard as an associate professor, Peterson returned to Canada in July 1998 and eventually became a full professor at the University of Toronto.
