About Jimmy Barnes

Dixon, Ames Barnes AO (born 28 April 1956 as Swan) is a Scottish-born Australian rock singer. His career as a solo performer and as the lead vocalist for the rock band Cold Chisel has made him one of Australia’s most popular and best-selling musicians of all time. Barnes has the most hit albums of any artist in the Australian market, with 14 Australian Top 40 albums for Cold Chisel and 13 charting solo albums, including 17 No. 1s.

Barnes was born James Dixon Swan in the Glasgow neighborhood of Cowcaddens, the son of Dorothy and Jim Swan. His father used to be a prizefighter. Although his maternal grandmother was Jewish, he was raised as a Protestant. He described his upbringing as a “slum” of alcohol and violence, claiming that his mother had him and his four siblings (John, Dorothy, Linda, and Alan) before she was 21 years old. His older brother, John, later rose to prominence as a singer under the moniker Swanee.

Barnes was initially uninterested in singing, so John encouraged and taught him how to do so. On 21 January 1962, he and his family arrived in Australia when he was five years old, initially in Adelaide but eventually settling in nearby Elizabeth. Lisa, another sister, was born later that year. Their parents divorced shortly after. Dorothy remarried to Reg Barnes, a clerk who died on September 3, 2013. [Citation required] Jimmy named himself James Dixon Barnes after his stepfather.

Barnes met Jane Mahoney (born 1958 as Jane Dejakasaya in Bangkok, Thailand), the stepdaughter of an Australian diplomat, in November 1979. Barnes began an affair with her. On May 22, 1981, they married in Sydney, and on July 12, 1982, Jane gave birth to their first child, Mahalia, named after Mahalia Jackson. They have four kids (Mahalia, Eliza-Jane, Elly-May and Jackie).

Barnes began his solo career in December 1983, less than a month after Cold Chisel’s Last Stand tour ended. He formed a band with Arnott, former Fraternity bass guitarist Bruce Howe[15], and guitarists Mal Eastick (ex-Stars) and Chris Stockley (ex-The Dingoes), and began touring and writing for a solo album. Barnes signed with Mushroom Records and released his first single, “No Second Prize,” in August 1984, which peaked at number 12 in Australia. Bodyswerve, his first solo album, was released in September 1984 and debuted at number one in Australia. Eliza-Jane (“E.J.”) Barnes was born on December 22, 1984, just days after Barnes began that year’s Barnestorming tour.
