Nana Yaa Brefo’s tale is a sobering reminder of the challenges that many women endure while trying to conceive.
According to the World Health Organization, around 10% of women worldwide suffer from infertility, and IVF is one of the choices open to them.
IVF is a set of operations aimed to help with fertility, avoid genetic problems, and aid in childbirth. The procedure involves extracting a woman’s eggs from her ovaries and fertilizing them in a laboratory dish with sperm.
Nevertheless, as Nana Yaa Brefo’s story demonstrates, IVF is not always successful and might cause health difficulties for the individual having the process.
Brefo said that she had attempted IVF six times, four of which were successful but resulted in termination at some point.
She has also pondered adoption, but has yet to get the guts to continue. After meeting with the social welfare director three times and visiting an orphanage to meet with two girls, she has unable to get the confidence to pursue adoption. She said that she is now working on a project that will define her future moves.
Nana Yaa Brefo has taken a hiatus from trying to have a baby due to the severe health difficulties she has had as a consequence of the IVF and other operations she has undertaken.
She confessed in an interview with Adom TV that she had tried various methods, including but has been unsuccessful. She said that, despite the expense, the health complications are severe, therefore she has decided to rest for the time being.
