According to an unidentified gay male, many Ghanaian men cheat on their spouses under the pretense of marriage to conceal their true sexual orientation.
Stephen (not his actual name) claims that most of his countless sex affairs have been with married guys who have not yet come out of the closet or accepted their sexuality.
He told GhanaWeb that these males act content at home to avoid raising suspicions, but they secretly indulge in same-sex activities.
“Because, I’ve had instances where I’ve been with married men – a lot of married men, to be honest, a whole lot: who have their wives thinking they are in a happy home but then at the end of the day when they pick their bags to go to work, they come to me before they go home,” he narrated.
Stephen’s admission occurs at a time when discussions about making same-sex (LGBTQ) behavior illegal have become more heated.
The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, often known as the anti-LGBT bill, is being debated in parliament. If passed into law, it would be illegal to identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ group and participate in activities linked to that community. Criminals would face prison time.
Stephen claims he would enter into a heterosexual relationship to avoid being noticed because of the high likelihood that the bill, which has been recommended for approval by the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Parliament, will pass. He views this as the woman’s unfair behavior.
But he said that he will keep engaging in covert same-sex relationships.
“A typical example, if I’m to marry in Africa, I will definitely marry a woman… I’ll still do men even in the absence of my wife; in secrecy, I’ll still do men, which I don’t think is fair to anyone’s daughter,” he said.
Nonetheless, Stephen insisted that in order not to “put your sister or anyone through such; I’d rather live my truth.”
