“I can still play professional football despite my age”- Michael Essien

Former Ghana national team player Michael Essien has claimed that he is the only retired football player who is still capable of competing at a professional level in the sport.

Following his breakout season with Lyon, during which he won two titles in Ligue 1, Essien went on to have a trophy-laden career that spanned more than 15 years.

In 2005, Chelsea paid Lyon $24.4 million to acquire him, making him the club’s most expensive signing in the history of the franchise.

He helped the Blues win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League in the same year (2012) while playing at Stamford Bridge, where he spent almost a decade of his career.

The former player, who is now 40 years old, has also competed for Real Madrid and AC Milan. After only a brief period of time with Sabail FK in Azerbaijan, he decided to end their relationship.

Since that time, Essien has worked his way up to the position of manager at the Danish club FC Nordsjaelland, where he is also currently serving as an assistant coach for the first team.

At the Qatar 2022 World Cup, which is currently taking place, the Ghanaian is just one of many legendary players who are providing assistance to FIFA in a variety of different capacities.

During a question-and-answer session with the organization that is responsible for overseeing football on a global scale, Essien stated that Emiliano Martinez was the best goalkeeper at the competition.

In addition, he selected Raphael Varane of France as the tournament’s best defender and Jude Bellingham of England as the tournament’s best midfielder.

Essien laughed and named himself when he was asked to name a retired player who could still play professionally after their playing career had ended.

This joking remarks were made by the former Chelsea and Real Madrid star.

“Of all the guys I hang out with now, I think I’m the only one who can still play.”
