Gwen Stefani Bio
Gwen Stefani (born October 3, 1969) is a singer-songwriter, fashion designer, and actress from the United States. She is a co-founder, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter for the band No Doubt, whose singles include “Just a Girl,” “Spiderwebs,” and “Don’t Speak” from their debut studio album Tragic Kingdom in 1995, as well as “Hey Baby” and “It’s My Life” from subsequent albums.
Gwen Renée Stefani was born in Fullerton, California on October 3, 1969, and raised Catholic in nearby Anaheim, California. Her middle name, Renée, comes from the Four Tops’ 1968 version of the Left Banke’s 1966 song “Walk Away Renée.” She was named after a stewardess in the 1968 novel Airport. Dennis Stefani, her father, is Italian-American and worked as a Yamaha marketing executive. Patti, her mother, is Irish-American and was an accountant before becoming a housewife.
Gwen was introduced to 2 Tone music by Madness and the Selecter by her brother Eric, and in 1986, he invited her to provide vocals for No Doubt, a ska band he was forming. Interscope Records signed the band in 1991. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 1992, but its ska-pop sound was a flop due to the popularity of grunge. Prior to No Doubt and Sublime’s mainstream success, Stefani contributed guest vocals to “Saw Red” on Sublime’s 1994 album Robbin’ the Hood. Stefani criticized female grunge artists for being too aggressive, citing Blondie singer Debbie Harry’s combination of power and sex appeal as a major influence.
Stefani began dating Tony Kanal, a bandmate, shortly after he joined the band. She admitted to being emotionally invested in the relationship, saying, “all I ever did was look at Tony and pray that God would let me have a baby with him.” When Kanal ended the relationship, the band was on the verge of breaking up. Stefani’s lyrical inspiration came from their breakup, and many of Tragic Kingdom’s songs, such as “Don’t Speak,” “Sunday Morning,” and “Hey You!”, chronicle the ups and downs of their relationship. Many years later, Stefani co-wrote “Cool,” a song about their friendship, for her 2004 debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
