“Giving money to a police officer on the street is illegal” – ACP Kwesi Ofori tells public

The Acting Director-General of the Ghana Police Service’s Public Affairs Directorate has warned the public not to bribe or pay off policemen who break traffic laws.

ACP Kwesi Ofori warned anyone caught breaking the law will be prosecuted.

Corrupt practices in the country will be eliminated, according to ACP Kwesi Ofori in an interview with Newsfile anchor Samson Lardy Anyenini.

“We want to build a big and strong nation. Giving and taking should be illegal. I believe the law has praised it. When asked about his vision for the police, our new IGP emphasized that anti-corruption is one of his visions to guarantee we disassociate ourselves from such unholy practices,” he stated on Saturday.

“I can promise you that the new wave in the police service is fighting corruption. The IGP is strict about it, and the police administration is committed to it. “We are gradually sensitizing our personnel while encouraging the public not to pay money to the cops on our streets,” ACP Kwesi Ofori said.

Samson Lardy Anyenini residents who pay off or bribe police personnel get a minimum of 12 years in prison. The cop in question faces 12 to 25 years in prison for accepting bribes.

As for the people, ACP Kwesi Ofori appealed to them to support the new administration in their fight against “corruption and its features within the service.”

The President has tasked the newly formed Ghana Police Council with successfully carrying out its duty.

This, he says, will help the IGP develop a police force that is accountable, transparent, trustworthy, respect basic human rights, and addresses public concerns.
