Who is Gilda Radner?
Gilda Susan Radner, (born June 28, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, United States—died May 20, 1989 in Los Angeles, California), was an American actress and comedian who was one of the seven original cast members of the NBC sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live’s “Not Ready For Prime Time Players.” Radner specialized in parodies of television stereotypes, such as advice specialists and news anchors, in her routines.
Radner was raised in Detroit. She had a close relationship with her father, who took her to the theater and musicals in both Detroit and New York City. He died of a brain tumor when she was 14 in 1960. Radner struggled with eating disorders throughout her adolescence and beyond because she was overweight as a child. She majored in theatre and improvisation at the University of Michigan but did not graduate, instead relocating to Toronto in 1969. (by most accounts, to follow a boyfriend). She made her stage debut in Godspell (1972), a rock musical starring up-and-coming actors Martin Short, Eugene Levy, and Victor Garber. Radner also appeared at the Second City comedy club in Toronto.

She was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on May 17, 1989, for a CT scan. During the scan, she was given a sedative and fell into a coma. She never regained consciousness and died three days later, on May 20, 1989, with Wilder by her side. Ovarian cancer was the cause of death.
