Ghana’s first female heart surgeon successfully operates on a 6 years old girl (video)
Dr. Penelope Adinku, a talented Ghanaian medical doctor, has become Ghana’s first female cardiothoracic surgeon and has completed her first surgery successfully.
Joy News documented the historic moment when a six-year-old child suffering from heart illness had her problem completely resolved thanks to Dr Adinku’s expertise.
Since it was her first time, the female doctor underwent the procedure under the supervision of Dr Lawrence Agyemang Serebour, the chairman of the National Cardiothoracic Center.
After everything was said and done, the renowned doctor who had just created history smiled as he retold the story:
“She had her first surgery which improved her condition and she came for the second surgery which we just completed, where we opened up an obstruction in her heart to make sure blood flows into her lungs,” she said after the successful surgery.
Dr. Penelope Adinku feels it has taken so long for Ghana to have its first female cardiothoracic surgeon because of the demanding nature of the specialty, which makes it difficult for women to balance work and family obligations.
