The Ghana Education Service (GES) Takes Extreme Measures for BECE Candidates

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recently stirred controversy with a directive for supervisors and invigilators of this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Waija-Gbawe Municipality.

In a memo dated 18th July 2023, which has now gone viral on social media, the GES authorized a thorough search of all candidates, including their private parts, before allowing them to enter the examination hall. This directive, listed as point 4 in the communique, has been met with outrage due to its invasive nature.

The GES directive to conduct such an intrusive search on young candidates has sparked widespread criticism. Many consider this measure to be outrageous, violating the candidates’ privacy and dignity. The idea of subjecting children to such invasive searches is deeply unsettling, and the public is expressing their concerns and disappointment regarding the GES’s decision.

According to the GES, these extreme measures are part of their efforts to ensure a free, fair, and transparent conduct of the 2023 B.E.C.E. The GES believes that by conducting thorough searches, they can prevent any form of cheating or malpractice during the examination. They argue that such measures are necessary to maintain the integrity of the examination process and create a level playing field for all candidates.
