Former MP Arrested For Reportedly Defrauding A Scrap Dealer Of Over GH¢90k
The former Member of Parliament (MP) from Wulensi, Thomas Donkor Ogajah, is currently facing charges of fraud after allegedly deceiving a scrap dealer.
The MP is accused of defrauding the scrap dealer of an amount exceeding GH¢90,000 in two separate business transactions. Additionally, Ogajah has been accused of engaging in influence peddling with officials at the Ministry of Railways Development.
According to the details of the case, on September 17, 2021, the former MP met with the scrap dealer, Yussif Osman, at the Ministry of Interior in Accra. Osman was seeking to purchase scrap metal from the Ministry of Railways, and Ogajah allegedly demanded money from the scrap dealer in exchange for providing access to the scraps.
Subsequently, during their next meeting, Osman gave the MP GH¢5,000, with the promise of gaining large quantities of scrap metal. Ogajah justified the need for the funds by stating that they would be used to influence the Minister of Railways Development, Joe Ghartey, and the current Minister, John Peter Amewu, in the scrap deal. As a result, Osman made multiple payments totaling GH¢38,600.
In addition to the aforementioned charges, the former legislator has also been accused of dishonestly withholding funds owed to Osman following a scrap deal worth GH¢330,000 with a Chinese company. Allegedly, Ogajah pocketed profits amounting to GH¢170,000 after the sale of the scraps.
Due to financial difficulties arising from this situation, Osman reported the matter to the police on July 21, 2023, leading to Ogajah’s subsequent arrest on August 5, 2023.
The case is currently being handled by the appropriate authorities, and Ogajah will have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges levied against him.
