ECG To Disconnect Power In Supreme Court And Jubilee House Over Unpaid Electricity Bills For Years

The Supreme Court building and Jubilee House may be the targets of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) attempt to collect debts from state-owned institutions in an effort to acquire money.

The member of parliament for Pru East, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, suggested that the ECG make sure that all organizations that are owed money, such as the Supreme Court and Jubilee House, make payments.

Dr. Kwabena Donkor asserts that the ECG itself is responsible for a portion of the debt owed by institutions.

Furthermore, he asserted that the power distribution company had in the past yielded to pressure from governmental organizations to take steps to repay its debt.

Regarding the reasons behind the ECG’s debt, Dr. Donkor stated that…

“It is an attitudinal problem. A lot of government institutions think there is one central government and that there can be debt settlement… there used to be an agency settlement arrangement but that is no more. “ECG is partly to blame, previously it has succumbed to all sorts of pressures from government institutions. When I was the Minister of Power we put the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance on prepaid, once you put them on prepaid they can’t accumulate debt unless there is a fault, that is the challenge.”

Additionally, the ECG has been disconnecting businesses and households due to debt.
