ECG goes after chairman wontumi for stealing electricity worth over 300,000 cedis

Wontumi Radio and TV in Kumasi are being pursued by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for stealing electricity.

Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, owns two media outlets.

They were one of roughly 100 firms in the area accused of stealing electricity.

The General Manager of Wontumi Communications Limited, said.

“Unfortunately, I don’t have the bill in front of me, but they gave us about GHS300,000 to pay at first, and then they lowered it to over GHS100,000.”

“I’m surprised that this issue is in the news,” he said.

“You’ll be surprised to learn that ECG has started to collect the debt. When we bought power from ECG for the first time since the problem started, 40% of the money was taken out to pay off the debt. This means that we have started to pay, so why do you go to the media?”

“As the business manager for the media company, I’m not very technical. I don’t even know what a tempered meter is, so we were just doing our jobs.”

“Until this problem came up, none of my technical staff did that either.”

“We still haven’t told Chairman Wontumi, who owns the station, so we can settle the problem with ECG. As you know, he’s been very busy with his campaign.”
