“Do it in your room if you want to be safe”- Nana Yaa Brefo advises LGBTQ members in Ghana.

The debate about the acceptance and criminalization of LGBTQ people in Ghana has dominated several debates on social media and in print and broadcast media for the past four days.

This comes after Kamala Harris’ visit to Ghana, when Nana Addo was supposed to have made a clear and unequivocal declaration about Ghana’s position on LGBTQ issues.

Nana Addo claims that the attorney general has been instructed to review the legislation and make sure that any provisions that violate individual rights are removed.

Akufo-Addo insisted that he could not definitively say whether or not the activities of LGBTQ individuals would be legalized in Ghana until the bill was passed by parliament and received his approval.

In order to prevent the government from passing laws that restrict other people’s freedom, Kamala Harris advocated that everyone’s rights, regardless of their sexual orientation, be upheld.

Although Akufo-Addo did not express the government’s position unequivocally, he acknowledged that a majority of Ghanaians support the passage of the anti-gay legislation and that he would monitor the situation until all the procedures had been completed.

In response, Nana Yaa Brefo recommended the LGBTQ people have fun in private spaces for their own peace of mind and safety.

In an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Nana Yaa Brefo argued that it was unnecessary to advocate that it be made legal in Ghana.

Nana Yaa Brefo continued by advising those who indulge in such behavior to do so in private if that is what they feel like doing rather than try to make it known to others.

She continued by saying that many things take place in people’s bedrooms in many households, which may be more harmful than what the LGBTQ+ community demands, but no one ever speaks about it since they haven’t witnessed it.
