Satya Narayana Nadella (born August 19, 1967 in Telugu) is an Indian-American business executive. He is Microsoft’s executive chairman and CEO, succeeding Steve Ballmer as CEO in 2014 and John W. Thompson as chairman in 2021. He was the executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group before becoming CEO, and was in charge of building and running the company’s computing platforms.
Nadella was born into a Telugu-speaking Hindu family in Hyderabad, present-day Telangana, India. His mother, Prabhavati, was a Sanskrit lecturer, and his father, Bukkapuram Nadella Yugandhar, was a 1962 batch Indian Administrative Service officer.
Nadella attended Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Karnataka’s Manipal Institute of Technology in 1988. Nadella then went to the United States to pursue an M.S. in computer science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he graduated in 1990. In 1997, he earned an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Before joining Microsoft in 1992, Nadella worked as a member of the technology staff at Sun Microsystems. Nadella has led major projects at Microsoft, including the company’s transition to cloud computing and the creation of one of the world’s largest cloud infrastructures.
