Dennis Waterman was born the youngest of nine children in Clapham, London, and raised with his family, which included brothers Ken and Peter as well as sisters Stella, Norma, and Myrna.
The family lived at 2 Elms Road, Clapham Common South Side.

Dennis’ father, Harry Waterman, worked as a ticket collector for the British Railways. His mother, and two elder sisters, Vera and Joy, had both left the family by the time Dennis was born, and another brother, Allen, had died when he was a small boy.
Waterman grew up with boxing as a great passion, and it played an important role in his development. His father had been an amateur boxer, and he insisted on all of his kids become involved in the sport.
Dennis began boxing with his older brother Ken when he was three years old, and when he was ten, he joined the Caius Boxing Club in Philadelphia.
