Dear Ghana,

I wanted to take a moment to address something that has been weighing heavily on my mind. Our country can be a funny place, and sometimes it’s hard to understand the rules that govern our society. Recently, there has been a lot of attention focused on the issue of abortion, specifically highlighted by actress Yvonne Nelson’s revelation in her memoir, “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson.”

In her book, Yvonne Nelson bravely shared her traumatic experience of having an abortion after being impregnated by rapper Sarkodie in 2010. It takes incredible strength to open up about such a personal and painful experience, and I commend her for her honesty. However, what troubles me is the way Ghanaians have reacted to her story.

I can’t help but notice the double standards and hypocrisy that exist in our society. There is a song circulating, celebrating a man convincing a woman to have an abortion, and it has been widely embraced and celebrated. Yet, when Yvonne Nelson shares her own experience with abortion, she is met with criticism and backlash. How can we celebrate one and condemn the other?

Some argue that the song is just entertainment and should not be taken seriously. But isn’t Yvonne Nelson’s story also a form of expression? Shouldn’t she have the right to share her own experiences without fear of judgment? It is disheartening to witness this unending double standard.

We need to create a more compassionate and understanding society. We should be able to have open discussions about sensitive topics like abortion without shaming or silencing those who have gone through it. Our focus should be on supporting and empathizing with one another, rather than perpetuating hypocrisy.

In conclusion, I urge Ghanaians to reflect on our attitudes and actions when it comes to issues like abortion and personal experiences. Let us break free from the chains of hypocrisy and embrace empathy and understanding. It is time to create a society where everyone feels safe to share their stories and experiences, without fear of judgment or backlash.

Together, we can build a more compassionate Ghana.
