Who is Brian Binnie?
William Brian Binnie was a United States Navy officer and one of the test pilots for SpaceShipOne, a Scaled Composites experimental spaceplane that flew from 2003 to 2004.
Brown University awarded Binnie a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. Brown University awarded him a master’s degree in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. After being rejected by the US Air Force, Binnie enrolled at Princeton University, where he earned a master’s degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He was a naval aviator in the United States Navy for 21 years, rising to the rank of commander. He flew the A-7 Corsair II, A-6 Intruder, F/A-18 Hornet, and AV-8B Harrier II, among other aircraft. In 1988, he graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School. Binnie also piloted the Rotary Rocket’s Atmospheric Test Vehicle. He was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Aberdeen in 2006.
Binnie joined XCOR Aerospace in 2014 as a senior engineer and test pilot, after many years as a test pilot and program business manager for Scaled Composites. Binnie and his wife, Bub, were the parents of three children.
Binnie died at the age of 69 on September 15, 2022.
