Bogoso- Appiatse Explosion: See all the shocking photos and videos we found on the scene.
The death toll from the Apeatse explosion is fifty as of the evening, with the search for survivors continuing thru the nite in the debris.
It has been revealed that hospitals, clinics, and morgues in and around Bogoso, a mining town, are overflowing with the maimed and dead.
As you are aware, on Thursday, Jan. 20, a truck owned by MAXAM, a mining support services contractor experienced in handling and transporting such materials, was transporting explosives along the Bogoso-Kumasi highway when a motorcycle ran under the truck, igniting the explosives and creating a crater in the middle of the road, with the force ripping apart buildings and humans.
According to some estimates, 500 building units were destroyed, and the human toll has risen to fifty, with fears of more to come.
Given the strict regulations in explosive handling and transportation, as well as MAXAM’s experience, it remains to be seen what went wrong to cause this tragedy.
LI 2177, according to Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare alias Kwaku Azar, was enacted to avoid the carnage witnessed at Bogoso.
He goes on to say that the regulation requires “the vehicle compartments in which explosives are transported to be covered with sheet metal and lined with treated wood to render it non-inflammable,” as well as that “the compartment should be ventilated, the vehicle should be clearly marked with the danger sign, there are fire extinguisher rules, driver training requirements, and so on.”
