Who is Bob Lanier?

Robert Jerry Lanier Jr. (September 10, 1948 – May 10, 2022) was an American professional basketball player who played center for the Detroit Pistons and the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Association.

He was born in Detroit and died in Milwaukee. In 1992, Lanier was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

In 14 seasons in the NBA, Lanier averaged 20.1 points per game, 10.1 rebounds per game, 3.1 assists per game, 1.5 blocks per game, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting a remarkable 51.4 percent from the floor.

He appeared in eight NBA All-Star Games and was awarded the game’s Most Valuable Player in 1974, despite the fact that he never appeared in an NBA Finals throughout his professional career.

A long history of knee ailments did not prevent him from achieving great things. When he retired from professional basketball, his No. 16 jersey was retired by both the Pistons and the Bucks, as was his No. 31 jersey by St. Bonaventure University, where he played college basketball.

Following his retirement from playing, he became an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors, and later served as the team’s interim head coach for a brief period of time. He went on to serve as an NBA Cares Global Ambassador for the organization.

Robert Jerry Lanier Jr. was born on September 10, 1948, in Buffalo, New York, to Robert Jerry Lanier Sr. and Nannette Lanier. He was the son of Robert Sr. and Nannette.

When Lanier was younger, he attempted to play basketball but was initially turned down. In his attempt to try out for his elementary school’s football team, Lanier was told by a coach that his feet (which were a size 11 at the time) were too big for him to become a great athlete.

In spite of the fact that he was 6 feet 5 inches (1.96 m) tall at the age of 16, Lanier was not selected for the varsity basketball team during his sophomore year at Bennett High School due to his being regarded as too clumsy.
