A 20-year-old woman had one of the worst experiences of her life after reportedly being stabbed numerous times by a robber for refusing to hand up her Tecno Pop 5 phone.
Augustina Andrews told Skyy Power 93.5FM about her tragic experience. She is a resident of North Kwesimintsim, a neighborhood of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, and was attacked on her way home on Sunday, January 9.
Despite her siblings’ warnings not to take the route she had taken in the past due to the lack of street lights, she believed it was prudent to do so because it was a shortcut and she was famished and couldn’t wait to go home and eat something.
However, because there are no lights, she relied on her phone’s flashlight for visibility, which aroused the suspected thief and forced him to follow her surreptitiously.
“As I turned on my lights, I noticed a guy following me, but based on the way he was walking, he did not appear suspicious, so I continued casually.”
“I was also focused on my phone because I needed to make a call, and before I could raise my head to see ahead, he was in front of me demanding the phone.”
“I was horrified and gave over the phone to him; while I was doing so, I took a few steps back and stumbled; as I fell, I grabbed his dress and we both fell down.” He then got up and stabbed me in both arms and leg with a knife, thinking I was going to fight him.”
Augustina stated that she was discovered in a pool of blood by several neighbors who assisted and brought her to the Jemima Crentsil Hospital in Anaji for medical assistance.
Residents of North Kwesimintsim are begging city officials to act by installing street lights in their neighborhood and directing the police patrol team to include their community in their patrol zones since such crimes are becoming more regular.
