Burna Boy, a Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, remarked in an interview that Afrobeats lacks depth and that most Nigerian singers lack expertise.
Burna Boy claimed in a recent interview that 90% of Afrobeats musicians sing emptily and lack the experience to develop in-depth songs.
He then cites himself as an example of what he has tried to emphasize, claiming that he creates songs on various topics, as opposed to other Afrobeat singers who sing about nothing.
‘AfroBeats, as it is known, is primarily about nothing, literally nothing,’ he claims. ‘There’s no substance to it — like, nobody is talking about anything in it. It’s just a fantastic time’.
Some music fans have taken issue with the statement, claiming that the afrobeat performer is being greedy and self-centered by dismissing the genre that gave him his start.
