A man who prevented the deaths of 1,268 people has been sentenced to 25 years in jail.
This is what some people refer to as “going from grace to disgrace,” but it’s also discouraging and heartbreaking to read of the excellent things Paul did for thousands of Rwandans during the genocide, only to learn that he will now spend the most of his remaining life in prison.
Paul Rusesabagina, a top-ranking Rwandan politician, was not so lucky this time, as he was unable to defend himself against a Rwandan court yesterday. For terrorism-related crimes, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
All of this began when he was detained in Kigali in 2020 on nine terrorism charges relating to his involvement with the National Liberation Front, the PDR-military Ihumure’s branch.
PDR Ihumure’s armed wing claimed responsibility for a terrorist incident that killed at least nine persons in 2018. And, since forming the PDR Ihumure in 2006, he is widely regarded as the primary perpetrator.
Despite his courageous efforts for his people during the Rwandan Genocide in 1994, he was arrested and imprisoned for terrorism in his home nation of Rwanda.
During the Rwandan genocide, Paul Rusesabagina was the manager of the hotel that accommodated and housed 1268 Hutu and Tutsi refugees fleeing the Interahamwe militia. It is also known that none of these individuals were hurt or murdered.
He has also received various awards for his efforts on behalf of his countrymen during Rwanda’s genocide in 1994.
