Obinna Nwatu, a teenage boy, has been detained by the police for faking his kidnapping in order to extort money from his mother, Mrs. Rose Nwatu, according to the police.
His younger brother, who had no knowledge what Obinna was up to, stated to the police that his brother had been kidnapped near Stadium Road, Okpuala Ngwa by unknown people driving an ash-colored Sienna with an unknown registration number when he went to buy a recharge card, according to the police.
In the course of an investigation, the Command’s anti-kidnapping squad apprehended one Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe, whose bank account had been used to receive a ransom of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000).
This resulted in the arrest of Obinna, who admitted to staging his kidnapping and claimed that he did so because his mother is stingy with money.
Agbede made the following statement:
After being apprehended, Chinaza Favour Ukaigwe admitted to the police that Obinna Nwatu had staged his own kidnapping.
In his statement, he added that Obinna and one Favour Ugorji, also known as “Wizzy,” came to him at his shop on Aba Road in Abia State and demanded that he give them his bank account information so that they may use and get the school fees for their younger sister.
The investigation further found that Obinna Nwatu and Ugorji received the sum of two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) deposited into the account as a ransom by Mrs. Rose Nwatu (mother of Obinna Nwatu).
Obinna Nwatu has admitted that he was not kidnapped. He collaborated with Favour Ugorji, also known as Wizzy (who is currently at large), to go into hiding in a motel with Rhema University Road Aba in order to avoid been spotted.
